Tips on preventing mosquitos and other insects before spring

Spring has officially SPRUNG! Are you worried on pins and needles waiting for bugs and insects to stampede your yard and home?  Let us help calm your nerves!  Below are a few tips and tricks for things you can do at home to lower the pest population before hatching season!

 

1. Identify and fix standing water areas

Wait until the day after the first big spring rain, and then survey all yard space surrounding your home for any of the slightest flooded areas that are haven’t drained.  Standing water spots are breeding zones for mosquitos. So, you’ll want to identify and eliminate those areas before the mosquitos find them and begin breeding.Keep in mind, if you have a lot of vegetation in your back yard, you may have to combat higher populations of mosquitos.  If so, call us to treat underneath the leaves of your vegetation each month during high breeding season.

Tip: Apply more soil to patchy areas that are succumb to flooding.  If you have a bird bath, buy a plug-in to keep the water moving or switch to one that self-drains and self-fills.  

 

 2.  Keep wood piles outside

As nights are still a bit chilly and until you’re no longer building indoor fires, keep wood logs piled outside (not inside) of your home.  Only bring the amount you need in your home at one time.  Storing wood logs in your home may bring in insect and bug populations.

Tip: Keep your wood pile as far away from your house as possible, and regularly re-stack to disrupt “comfortable insect populations”

 

3.  Get out the caulk   

Inspect every wall, crack, crevice for openings to the exterior or openings to your basement.

Tip:  If you can see light seeping in, that means insects and rodents can invade. Use foam spray around basement concrete cracks and and install door sweeps and foam padding in exterior doorways.

Rodent: Have you had rodents in the past?  We will install bait boxes around the inside and outside of your home to keep them from coming back!
